The Simple Guide to Sterling Silver

There is one common question most people ask when purchasing sterling silver for the first time: "Does sterling silver tarnish?"
The answer is - Yes, it can. Sterling silver is made up of 92.5 percent silver and 7.5 percent of other metals that form an alloy.  Some of those other metals, primarily copper, can cause sterling silver to tarnish over time when they interact with moisture that's in the air.
The Truth about Tarnish:
Tarnish affects precious metals such as sterling silver and gold.  In time, all sterling silver and real gold will tarnish, regardless of where you bought it from or how much you spent on it. Tarnish is inevitable, tarnish is natural, and tarnish doesn't mean there is anything wrong with your jewelry.  It is just a natural process. We have to get our hair cut or it will start to look straggly.  Same goes for your jewelry – you need to care for it and clean it so that is stays looking at its best!
The good news is tarnish is not permanent, and it’s easily removed!
If your silver does tarnish, reverse the chemical reaction that creates tarnish. You'll just need a shallow bowl, aluminum foil, boiling water, and baking soda.

There are a variety of things you can do to limit the amount of tarnishing that will take place when you wear sterling silver jewelry and make your jewelry last for decades.
You should place sterling silver jewelry into a cool and dark part of your home when you aren't wearing it. It should be far away from sunlight, moisture, and heat.
Avoid contact with liquid substances, such as water, alcohol (perfume, sanitizer etc.) and other harsh chemicals.
Avoid contact with personal care products, for example, hairspray, soaps, lotions, body oils, etc.
If you accidentally wear your sterling silver jewelry into the shower one day or forget you have your sterling silver jewelry on and jump into a pool, it's not the end of the world.
But moisture is one of the things that will almost guarantee your sterling silver jewelry will tarnish. So you should keep it away from moisture at all costs.
It is recommended to keep the jewelry pieces in separate pouches to avoid scratching.

A few extra tips:
Store jewelry with chalk: If you throw a few pieces of chalk in with your sterling silver, the chalk will absorb the moisture and help prevent tarnishing.
Use silica packs: When you buy new clothing or shoes, sometimes you'll find silica packs in with them. Hold onto these and toss them in your jewelry box.

Stainless Steel Care Guide:

Stainless steel jewelry requires much less work to take care of and maintain. However, you can’t just throw your stainless steel jewelry anywhere. It’s very likely it will get scratched if it’s placed with other metals. So the most proper jewelry storage method is to keep your stainless steel jewelry in a clean and safe place, away from other items.
Stainless steel is waterproof, i.e. it does not lose its color or tarnish even after regular contact with water. Jewelry made of stainless steel can therefore be worn in the shower without hesitation. The same applies to gold-plated stainless steel.
